If you somehow managed to survive Friday the 13th with Black Sabbitch at the Neurolux, then you are ready and primed for perhaps the best old school meets new school metal show so far this year. Canada’s Striker is barreling down on Boise with one of the hottest NWOBHM/traditional line-ups you have ever experienced. Joining the Edmonton boys at The Shredder Saturday night will be SoCal’s Night Demon, along with Portland’s Spellcaster and Weresquatch. Tickets are a mere $8.
Edmonton-based Striker is touring in support of its new studio album, Stand in the Fire. The record is the band’s fourth effort, and has already received rave reviews from critics and fans alike. Striker’s style blends classic metal influences with some power metal elements to create a sound that is riff-driven, headbanging, and still highly melodic. If you grew up on bands likeIron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Saxon, you should really be able to sink your teeth into what Striker is all about. They are one of the New Wave of Traditional Heavy Metal band’s that have been about substance rather than cliché. If you like other NWOTHM bands like Enforcer or Ambush, you’ll love these guys.
In a similar, yet perhaps more old school mold is Night Demon. These guys played The Shredder last year. They were set to open for NWOBHM titans Raven who had to miss the show, and Night Demon stepped up and floored the crowd with their retro sound. The band is currently touring in support of its debut full-length album, Curse of the Damned.
Perhaps the secret weapon on an already stacked bill is Spellcaster. These Pacific Northwest speed riffers have slid quietly under the radar the last few years, but with the forthcoming release of the band’s third studio album, Night Hides the World, their anonymity is going to take a huge hit. They are one of the best new metal bands out there, and this weekend, Boise gets a chance to sample the goods.
The only band on the bill I am not already familiar with is Weresquatch. Another Portland band, these guys throw some thrash metal into the night’s mix. The band is touring in support of its 2015 debut album, Frozen Void. Weresquatch is fronted by former Dethproof vocalist/guitarist, Eric Eisenhauer.
If you are a fan of riff-heavy, fist-in-the-air metal in the vintage 70s-80s mold, then this is a show to be experienced. Any of these bands would be worthy of plunking down $8 for, but to get all four in one show, bonus!
